Welcome to Circling the Center, stories about everyday happenings, big lizard-brain feelings, and never getting it quite right but trying to fail better every time.
For those who know my family from earlier stories, we’re all purported adults now, gods help us. I’ve happily entered my age of the crone to assume her mantle of wisdom, or her comforting blanket of give-fewer-fucks… or are those the same thing? Aida, my daughter whose developmental disability means she will always be under my care to some degree, lives in a group home nearby where they fondly call her Princess, reflecting how her small language and communication cup nonetheless runneth over into superpower self-advocacy skills. Mimi has moved to a midwestern city of lesser rents and stretchier distance from her family dynamics, the better to stage her own adulting and enlighten us from her Zillennial platform.
Circling the Center means looking at human truths from various angles. Think of it as a stroll around a lake, a slightly dizzy twirl on drifting air currents, or sometimes a naked spin in a tornado while we try to get our bearings. We'll look at values, aspirations, fears, hopes, and making it all work from the different perspectives that aging and experience and paying attention can bring - Circling a Center that we never quite reach, but having a great time trying together.
